2013-14 at a glance

2013-14 was another eventful year building      on the fantastic efforts of the committee members of previous years.

Key activities:

·      Diwali celebrations (October 2013)

·      Parramasala: Participation of IWA members in the parade

·      Seniors week

·      Two picnics including one planned for August 16, 2014

·      Members’day

 Grants:

·      Seniors week grant from the NSW Department of Family and Community Services to promote positive ageing among our community.

·      Grant from the Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Services of the Federal Government to purchase a PA system

·      A small amount provided by Parramatta City Council for participation in the multicultural parade during “Parramasala”

diwali celebrations

On 27 October 2013 we celebrated Diwali in style with a dance show Deepangal Pesum by Thrayee School of Dance and a Tamil skit- Govinda Thayarikum Thiraipadam presented by  Holsworthy Tamil School. The event was a major success with over 250 people in attendance.

seniors’ week celebrations

We celebrated “Seniors’ Week” with a “Retirement Expo” on 22 March 2014 at the Ermington Community Centre. The event included talks by professionals, a garland making session, a Yoga session and a ‘Zumba for seniors’ dance session. A large number of senior community members attended the event and enthusiastically participated in all the activities. It was particularly great to watch the seniors joining in Zumba and Yoga.

Carolyn Romeo, State wide Multicultural Access program officer for the Dept. of Health Ageing and Community Care, presented an interactive session on Positive ageing. Carolyn raised issues about staff shortages in the community work sector and the need for people to volunteer. Carolyn urged the audience to familiarise with the Ageing strategies put in place by the NSW Government including the Local Councils and invited the members to visit the website This email address is being protected from spambots. Priya Iyer, an accredited dietician and nutritionist made a fabulous presentation on staying young for longer with a smart choice of food habits and nutrition. Priya Iyer also gave useful tips such as the "food switch" phone app.

Members’ day celebrations

Our celebrations for 2013-14 concluded with “Members’ Day” on 27 July 2014. The event provided an excellent opportunity for our members to learn to make a garland and also practice carom board and other traditional games. The events concluded with a game of Bingo and an excellent catered lunch.
